On my way home last night, I met a Canadian woman and her son. They’re staying at a hotel nearby on vacation…

I had heard her chatting with a bus driver on the first leg of the route, but didn’t pay much attention.

Once we were off and waiting for the next bus to leave, I got out my notepad and started doodling. I’d had an idea for a print and wanted to practice drawing the characters. Of course they happened to belong to Disney, my employer.

So I’m sitting at a table, doodling and I see a small figure step closer out of my periphery. The woman’s son was watching me draw.

‘You draw really good.’ He says.

I smiled and thanked him, starting another doodle on the same page. He wandered a few feet away and started talking to his mom about the art. I heard ‘Wreck-It Ralph.’ and ‘Oui.’

He wanders back over, watching again. I sign the paper next to my work, as per usual. People start shuffling towards the bus stop, so I get up, expecting my bus. The boy was looking up at me. I tore out the page with Felix scribbled on it, holding it up.

‘Do you want it?’ I ask.

‘Yes, thank you.’ The boy smiles and shows his mom.

‘Merci.’ She says, smiling at me.

On the second leg of the trip, we sat across from each other and I spoke with his mom about how their first day of vacation was. She tells me her son loves Wreck-It Ralph and how the day was a perfect start to their vacation. How I made the end of the night even better. We talk about their being bookworms and how I was one growing up. They love the Percy Jackson series.

It was a great ending to the night, for me, as well.

I like making people happy. They were both so charming.

Having a reminder once in a while about why I chose to work at Disney is a wonderful thing.
